Vitamins For Hair Loss

By: Paul Java

Both men and women can have issues with hair loss and suffer from thinning hair. While it is true that more men than women suffer from this anomaly, it is as important for women to attend to the health of their hair as it is for men. Vitamin supplements play a key role in the health of both hair follicles and skin. To keep the hair and skin on your head healthy the following vitamins can be critical. While this list is not exhaustive, it is a good base if you're just starting out.

Folic acid is one of the most important nutrients in keeping your hair strong and healthy on the top of your head. It promotes healthy cell growth which in turn produces healthy skin regeneration, and of course hair regeneration or hair regrowth. Taking folic acid can decrease your chances of hair loss, and keep the hair you do have from becoming dry and brittle. Folic acid can be purchased in supplements over the counter, but it is best to get your vitamins in the foods you eat. Folic acid is found in nuts and in soybeans. Try replacing your cow’s milk with soymilk. Soymilk is much higher in protein. It is also high in calcium and anti oxidants.

The next important vitamin is Vitamin A. Vitamin A is important to maintain healthy hair and skin as well as vision. A word of caution, too much vitamin A can actually cause hair loss by increasing the sebum in your hair follicles. Sebum is a substance produced by cholesterol which in normal amounts is conducive to healthy skin and hair, but too much can encourage the growth of bacteria at the follicle level and thus actually cause hair loss. You can find vitamin A in carrots, tomatoes, peppers, eggs and organ meats.

Vitamin E is also essential in the prevention of hair loss, found in green leafy vegetables. This vitamin helps to enhance circulation critical to healthy hair. Try adding a scalp massage to increase the blood flow to those critical hair follicles.

Vitamin C is also a great antioxidant that you should include in your daily supplement for overall good health. You can get vitamin C in citrus fruits, green peppers, and dark green vegetables. Biotin is another great vitamin; it produces keratin and could even prevent graying of the hair. Biotin is found in whole grains, egg yolks, and milk.

All of the B vitamins are critical for hair growth and circulation, it is found in chicken, fish, and turkey. B vitamins are also critical for energy and mental health. A supplement with a good balance of all the B vitamins is a good idea.

In closing, it is critical to understand that too much of a good thing is not good for you. Most of the excess vitamins are eliminated in the urine, but some can be toxic. Please choose wisely and do not abuse vitamin supplement consumption. It is a good idea to check with your physician before incorporating vitamin supplements into your regular diet.
