What is Ultrasonic Liposuction?

Ultrasonic liposuction, sometimes called ultrasonic-assisted lipoplasty (UAL) is very common in Tampa Bay cosmetic surgery. This newer technique, often performed in conjunction with traditional or tumescent liposuction, seems to give the best results, says Tampa Bay plastic surgeon Dr. Eric Egozi of Egozi Plastic Surgery.

So how does ultrasonic liposuction differ from traditional Tampa Bay liposuction? The difference is in the equipment. UAL uses high-frequency sound waves to essentially liquefy the stubborn fat deposits which commonly occur in areas like the abdomen, thighs, neck, hips, back, and buttocks, beneath the skin’s surface. This ultrasonic enhancement isolates the fat cells, destroys them and makes them easier to remove, a feat which traditional liposuction cannot accomplish on its own.

Using UAL, surgeons can remove significant amounts of fat in one sitting, without the worry of damaging surrounding tissues as associated with tumescent liposuction. Some surgeons are hoping that this newer liposuction technique will replace the traditional form of liposuction.

The procedure is generally similarly performed to that of traditional liposuction, and so the same risks are involved, though rare. Because lipoplasty focuses on the fat underneath the skin, a patient must have good skin elasticity. For lipoplasty or liposuction localized in the abdominal region, sometimes Tampa Bay tummy tuck surgery (Abdominoplasty) is performed at the same time, so that the skin and muscles are tightened giving a nicely sculpted flat stomach.

Body sculpting procedures like lipoplasty, liposuction, and abdominoplasty should not be seen as a way to lose weight. Though weight loss is associated with these procedures, it is entirely possible for a patient to gain weight after the procedures if they do not lead a well-balanced diet and an active and healthy lifestyle. As Dr. Egozi puts it, “Realize that although significant amounts of tissue may be removed with these procedures that these are NOT weight loss procedures. They are to be thought of as body sculpting and contouring procedures altering how you look in and out of clothing.”
